A Senior Companion is a volunteer 55 years+ who provides companionship to the elderly and disabled. A Companion may also provide transportation and other light duties.
The Senior Companion Program is a nationwide program funded by AmeriCorps Seniors and has been around for over 50 years. Our local Senior Companion Program serves Nez Perce, Asotin, and Latah counties.
A Senior Companion must commit to serving at least 5 hours per week and may not do more than 40 hours per week.
Does a Senior Companion receive any payment or benefits?
YES! There are many benefits for the Senior Companion that go beyond just feeling good about helping someone in need.
- Non-taxable hourly pay (called a stipend) that will not affect any other benefits for which you may qualify

What does a Senior Companion do?
- Friendly Visiting - Provide companionship, enjoy a chat, play games, share coffee or a meal, or watch a movie together.
- Exercising - Enjoy a walk, stretching, or workout with videos
- Transportation - Provide transportation to a doctor's appointment, grocery shopping, errands, or community events.
- Shopping assistance - Shop together or shop for your client's list. Pick up prescriptions.
- Advocacy and Paperwork - Help sort, read or organize mail. Assist with identifying community resources.
A Senior Companion is thoroughly vetted and must pass a fingerprint-based criminal history check. The Companion will be provided with orientation and will attend monthly education meetings.
A Senior Companion is not a caretaker, and will not bathe, dress, or physically care for their clients.
